3.3.4.7. Cylinders
THE GENERAL DATA

Theoretically new cylinder is ideally round. Piston work leads to deterioration of walls under right angles to piston fingers because of lateral loading. This deterioration takes place mainly in this section of the cylinder because of a friction about piston rings.

Representation about deterioration of the cylinder can be received, having removed heads of cylinders when the engine still is in the car. Deterioration first signs can be noticed, when the piston is in the cylinder in the bottom position, and to feel a step directly near to the top part of the cylinder where the top piston ring reaches. If such step is absent, means, deterioration of the cylinder is insignificant and there are no the losses caused by a lack of a compression or the superfluous expense of oil because of deterioration or damage of piston rings or pistons.

In the presence of a special micrometer for cylinder measurement to measure diameter of the cylinder in a plane below an edge, and also diameter of an aperture in the bottom part of the cylinder in the same plane. If the difference makes more than 0,076 mm, it is necessary to execute расточку. Similarly the difference in 0,076 mm or more in diameter of the cylinder is a sign of ovality and also causes расточки.

If in any of cylinders there are appreciable scratches or furrows, he also demands расточки. This phenomenon usually specifies in damage of the piston or rings. If at least one of cylinders requires in расточке, it is necessary to execute this operation for all cylinders and to establish new pistons and piston rings of the repair size. When engines have already been chiseled for the maximum size, there are loose leaves (sleeves) of cylinders which if necessary can be established. In such cases for performance of process of a repoint and corresponding service the help of specialised firm is required.
